brakence without a doubt has been my favorite artist since punk2 dropped in 20202. Friends and family are aware of how much I advocate for his artistic and musical talent as I have constantly berated them to hop on his wave. His artistic transition from punk2 to his recent wave of singles has been fascinating to watch as he has transcended to new types of genre fusion all in a very authentic and stylistic manner. Artists now-a-days are getting clustered up with associating acts and are constantly being compared to one another instead of recognized for unique artistic style. brakence fails to fall in a cluster as his entire artistic and musical being is one of one. Fusions of hyperpop, midwest emo, glitchcore, punk, indie, etc all melt together to form an artistic style that can only be described as “brakence.”
His newest single transcends genre fusion unlike anything else in his discography. The first leg of the song grows from a midwest emo riff into a steady indie rock rhythm. All of the drums have a twinge of hyperpop and glitch influence with sharp hi hats and stingy kicks. brakence has loads of effects on his guitar loops that cement them as his own touch with occasional glitches and pauses that avoid creating a lull of a song.
The next leg of the song heightens the energy with edm inspired drums building up to a wavy static beat drop — a signature feature of brakence’s artistic style. Quickly after the drop the song begins to fade into a set of somber and whimsical piano/keyboard keys. This smoothly and suddenly transitions the song into a gorgeous outro that accentuates brakence’s vocals over a piano ballad. The keys are light and delicate and allow brakence to convey his emotion with ease, creating a mesmerizing listening experience infused with distorted drums and vocals.
The entirety of the song absolutely bangs and is arguably brakence’s most artistically bold and creative cuts. The flow of varying production is a journey itself that is captivating in nature — making five minutes fly by with ease. I become more infatuated with the cut after each listen and have a greater appreciation for his ability and innate talent as an artist.
