Like anyone, I have experienced many music phases throughout my life, especially recently. I go through cycles where songs live on my “On Repeat” playlist for days at a time, only never to see the light of day again. Very rarely do my cycles turn into regular listening habits in my day-to-day life. I had been on a hardcore hyperpop binge for the majority of 2021, playing its way into my regular listening discography. Towards the tail end of 2021, I finally listened to “how I’m feeling now” by Charli XCX — which is known as a staple hyperpop album. Like all my past cycles, Charli XCX songs flooded my “On Repeat” playlist for the next few days. However, this time around, the time of days turned into weeks and months. A phase no longer, I became a daily Charli XCX listener, and according to my Spotify Stats, she is now my most listened to artist of the last six months (like I needed to look). A true girl boss and absolute queen, these songs of hers have rampaged my playlists and hold constant appeal for any situation.
enemy — CharliXCX
enemy is my personal favorite CharliXCX song. I’m sucked in with the layered melodic synths varying between octaves. Her flow is smooth and captivating as she shows varied vocal deliveries with each song section. The overall ambiance and vibe of the song are heartfelt and calming as it contrasts the lyrical content. The contrast of a relatively upbeat ballad littered with lyrics about isolation and self-discovery creates an exciting listening experience. I have listened to this song in all possible scenarios but always find it my go-to for kickbacking and mellowing.
forever — CharliXCX
forever is far more hyperpop infused and experimentally out there — mainly due to AG Cook’s production. Blaring sirens and fuzzed-out sirens start the song off and steadily stay throughout. The lyrics are baked in sincere romance, with the chaotic instrumental representing her internal conflicts with romance itself. Once again, another banger of a track with a loud and glitchy bridge breakdown exuding controlled chaos.
detonate — CharliXCX
detonate, without a doubt, is one of the more upbeat songs on how I’m feeling now, with loads of spacey blips and drums building up energy through the song. There is a clear scaled production scheme with varied instrumental solos and space for Charli to shine vocally. I love how the song is imbued with glitchcore energy, from the chopped vocals to the layered pitched synths. Certified CharliXCX banger.
